AN EXHIBITION ON PALERMO’S BELLE ÉPOQUE
The designation “felicissima” referred to Palermo is linked to the Belle Époque, a unique and unrepeatable period in which the city, according to the collective imaginary of the citizens, knew how to be at the forefront in the fields of culture, production and architecture, thanks to the incentive of an emerging and rampant bourgeoisie.
The undisputed protagonists of Palermo Felicissima are some upper-class families, and almost all of them had immigrated to the city during the past century, and among them undoubtedly stood out the Florios, the Scalias, the Ahrens and others.
Palermo Felicissima is an interactive and multi-media exhibition, born from the collaboration between Odd Agency and CoopCulture that joins advanced technologies and immersive installations to allow visitors to interact with a large archive of information, to discover places, people, events, architecture
THE EXHIBITION PATH
INTRO – THE HISTORY
The experience begins here. Before getting to the heart of the experience, is it possible to consult, via touch screens, a timeline of the main events that happened in Palermo and worldwide, between 1870 and 1914. This will help you better understand the Belle Époque era and the events that shaped it. Those will be divided into thematic sections corresponding to the exhibition’s content: Architecture, Urban Planning, Costume and Society, Economy and Production.
ARCHITECTURE AND URBAN PLANNING
Some of the interactive installations will show the major architectural works of Palermo Felicissima, and another will tell the urban transformations of the city between the end of the Nineteenth century and the beginning of the Twentieth, as the construction of the big theatres, via Libertà, the urban renewal in the city center with the construction of via Roma. There will be also some touch-screen panels dedicated to the lives and works of major exponents of Art Nouveau in art and architecture.
ECONOMY AND SOCIETY
A big interactive table will show you the areas that have characterized the economic and industrial development of Palermo and, in general, of Sicily. There will also be two interactive books populated with texts, photos, and videos of the time dedicated to the sports and mundane chronicles. There will also be a cookbook of Sicilian traditional recipes that proposes those of the book “Il fotografo cuoco” of Matilde Incorpora.
ANIMATED MOVIE
You can’t talk about “Palermo Felicissima” without referring to the Florio family. Odd Agency’s art team has made an animated movie about family history, which will be projected on a big curve and immersive screen. From the arrival of Paolo and Ignazio Florio from Calabria to the epilogue with Ignazio Jr., the whole story will be narrated by an exceptional narrator, the only true witness of all that has happened.
VIRTUAL REALITY: A WALK IN PALERMO IN 1892
The experience continues with virtual reality headsets, through which you’ll be able to make a virtual walk in Palermo during 1892. Odd Agency’s VR team has faithfully reconstructed the path from Piazza Verdi to Piazza Castelnuovo, proposing the scenarios of the time like the construction works of Teatro Massimo, piazza Regalmici before the transformations of the Nineteenth Century, the disappeared Piazzetta Milazzo and the pavilions of the Great National Exhibition.
